NATIONAL MOBILITY & INDEPENDENCE TRAINING CENTRE (NMITC) OF DGSE HELD AWARENESS CAMPAIGN ABOUT WHITE CANE FOR MOTORWAY POLICE AT MOTORWAY POLICE HEADQUARTERS, ISLAMABAD ON 18 MAY, 2023

NM&ITC launched an awareness campaign about white cane and its usage in offices, schools and other public as well as private places. In this connection the team from NM&ITC imparted training about the use of white cane with the help of practical demonstrations. The NM&ITC organized a one day awareness programme/ one day training session at Motorway Police Headquarter, H-8/1, Islamabad on 18th May, 2023. The SP of Motorway police welcomed warmly the team of NM&ITC. The event started with the recitation of the Holy Quran. Muhammad Jabbar Khan, Mobility Instructor NM&ITC gave an introductory speech about special education that outlined the importance of white cane in our society and how Blind individuals could benefit from it. He also briefed about White cane and role of Motorway police with visually impaired person. After this session Motorway Police also gave awareness about providing help and guidance to visually impaired during duty for road crossing/ bridges, metro station, public transport, road sides and footpaths etc. He further highlighted on the rehabilitation of Blind person through white cane. A visually handicapped person can easily lead an independent life with the use of white cane. The 39 male and female Officers/Officials including SP, DSP, constable and admin staff of Motorway Police attends the training session.

The officer/official of Motorway Police took part in this training session and carried out practical demonstrations. They recognized the importance of white cane and extended their help towards visually Impaired Persons, while out at public areas and under unmonitored conditions. This would also prove beneficial in cases where the Blind person has not yet received mobility training or awareness about the white cane.

Mr. Younas, Inspector, Headquarter Motorway Police, Islamabad thanked NM&ITC for training/practical demonstration of the staff of Motorway Police and imparting awareness about mobility to them. He commented that while they are learning from books, they also get a chance to act on that knowledge through practical demonstrations. He appreciated the authorities of DGSE, and NM&ITC who cooperated with the motorway police and carried out sessions about mobility and orientation for the Blind.

Mrs. Nabeela Yasmin, Senior Petrol Officer, Motorway Police, Islamabad also suggested that the sign of whitecane also should be included in the traffic signs so that the each driver could help the PWDs.
