Empowering the Visually Impaired through Technology: DGSE Leads Transformative Initiatives for Persons with Disabilities
Islamabad, August 29, 2025: The National Mobility & Independence Training Centre (NM&ITC), operating under the Directorate General of Special Education (DGSE), Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, successfully concluded a Two-Week National Training Course on Basic Computer Training with Job Access with Speech JAWS and Non Visual Desktop Access NVDA Softwares for Visually Impaired Persons, held at the National Institute of Special Education (NISE), Islamabad, from August 18 to 29, 2025. The course brought together 43 participants from across Pakistan, including Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and Islamabad. The trainees ranged from secondary school students to Master’s level, along with parents and teachers of visually impaired persons. The content included computer basics, keyboard orientation, Windows navigation, email creation, and practical application of Job Access with Speech (JAWS) and Non-Visual Desktop Access (NVDA) software. The training was led by Mr. Abdul Wahid from Mansehra, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, one of the pioneers of technology education for the Blind community in Pakistan. The Certificate Distribution Ceremony on Friday, August 29, 2025, was marked by inspiring moments. Students from the National Special Education Centre for Visually Handicapped Children, G-7/2 Islamabad, also participated. A special highlight was the heartfelt performance of Fawad Alam, a blind student and recipient of the Prime Minister’s Special Award on Independence Day, who presented a medley of national songs on the Rubab. Trainees shared their personal experiences, narrating how the training had empowered them. Their stories of resilience and achievement served as a beacon of hope and inspiration for the visually impaired students in the audience. The ceremony was graced by Professor Dr. Hafeez ur Rehman, a distinguished social scientist of international repute, who attended as Chief Guest and distributed certificates among the participants. With numerous doctoral supervisions to his credit, Dr. Rehman is also acknowledged by Blind community for supervising Dr. Hafiz Abdur Rasheed, a blind scholar, to his successful PhD in Anthropology at Quaid-i-Azam University. In his remarks, he praised the determination of visually impaired individuals and emphasized the transformative role of technology in promoting inclusivity, a mission strongly advanced by DGSE in leadership of Mo FE&PT. He also stressed upon the need of research in social sector regarding the challenges faced by Persons with disabilities to come up with grounded solutions as emic voices The event reaffirmed the commitment of Federal government to empowering persons with disabilities by equipping them with modern skills, enabling greater independence and meaningful contributions to national development.
Director Training Mrs Noreen on behalf of Director General Special Education Capt R Asif Iqbal Asif congratulated the successful trainees and course organizers and also deliberated upon the revamping initiatives being taken at service delivery institutions of the Directorate General of Special Education.
