Three-Day National Training Course on Speech and Hearing Sciences Held by DGSE at NISE, Islamabad
Islamabad, May 30, 2025 — The Directorate General of Special Education (DGSE), under the Ministry of Federal Education & Professional Training, successfully conducted a three-day national training course titled “Bridging Sound and Speech: Advancing Skills in Speech and Hearing Sciences” at the National Institute of Special Education (NISE), Islamabad. The training took place on May 27th, 29th, and 30th, 2025, and brought together 97 professionals from across the country. The training course aimed to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of those working in speech therapy, audiology, special education, and rehabilitation. Participants included speech and language pathologists, audiologists, psychologists, therapists, educators, researchers, students, and parents of children with disabilities. Notable institutions represented included Riphah International University, NIRM, COMSATS University, Khyber Medical University, Shifa International Hospital, Autism Resource Centers, and the Army Special Education Academy, among others. The event commenced with a welcome address by Mrs. Naureen Altaf, Officer Incharge at NISE, followed by an orientation session conducted by course coordinator Mr. Muhammad Asim. The opening remarks emphasized the importance of early intervention, effective referral systems, and interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing hearing and speech impairments. Over the course of three days, eight expert-led sessions were held, covering a range of crucial topics such as audiological evaluations, speech-language assessments, vestibular disorders, assistive technologies, and communication rehabilitation techniques. The sessions were conducted by leading professionals in the field including Ms. Sadaf Zafar, Mr. Shahbaz Akhtar Khalid, Dr. Sajida Mehmood, Dr. Sadaf Noveen, and Dr. Irfan Ahmad. Interactive discussions, practical demonstrations, and real-life case studies formed a key part of the training, offering participants hands-on experience and practical insights. Special emphasis was placed on audiogram interpretation, the use of amplification devices such as hearing aids and cochlear implants, and the role of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems in educational settings. One of the highlights of the course was the presentation of evidence-based practices and success stories in early intervention, which underscored the transformative impact of timely diagnosis and coordinated care. The training also advocated for inclusive education and emphasized the need for adaptive teaching strategies for children with communication challenges. The event concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony attended by senior officials from DGSE, the Establishment Division, and representatives of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) organizations. In his closing remarks, Director General of Special Education, Capt (Retd) Asif Iqbal, reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to continuous professional development and capacity building in the field of special education and rehabilitation. The training was widely appreciated by participants and was lauded for its role in professional networking, capacity enhancement, and reinforcing a collective, rights-based approach to supporting individuals with speech and hearing difficulties across Pakistan.
